Changing Mindsets

It is important to know about interpersonal relationships. What keeps and what really disturbs interpersonal relationships? The relationship gets disturbed when disagreement begins.

Just look at yourself. Have you always agreed with yourself? You had some idea yesterday; today you may have a different idea. Five years back you had other ideas that do not necessarily agree with the ideas that you have today. So when you have disagreement with yourself, why should it not happen with someone else?
The 'someone' you have a disagreement with is just a photocopy of your old or the new self. So you need to take a look at your own thought patterns and emotional patterns, there is a rhythm in them. And there is a rhythm in the consciousness. We need to find a harmony between all these rhythms within us and that's what is called spirituality.

Spirituality is not just fantasizing; it's observing your own existence. Have we thoroughly known our body? You can know someone else's body but have you experienced your own body? Experiencing your own body, your breath, your mind, your emotion and the source of your life is meditation. Meditation is experiencing the life force and being conscious of it; and it is done effortlessly.

Mind and body function on completely opposite laws. In the realm of mind, effortlessness is the key. You cannot remember something by putting effort. The moment you relax the memory comes back. Creativity, intelligence and memory all these faculties within us happen effortlessly. But you can build muscles only when you put effort.

How do you listen? The sounds come and fall on the eardrums but if the mind is elsewhere, can you hear? You are listening through that faculty in you that is called the mind. When you are listening, you are either agreeing or disagreeing. Notice whether you are saying yes or no. This something by which we say yes or no is called the intellect.
It is the same consciousness that functions as man, buddhi, chitta, ahankaara. Our ancient people have called the four different faculties as Antahkaran Chadushtaya. Similarly, if you observe memory, it clings onto something that is negative. Ten compliments you will forget from someone but his one insult will stick to the mind.

This needs to be reversed; and the process of reversing this tendency of the mind from clinging on to the negative and moving to something positive is called yoga. Yoga makes you like a baby again. It not only revives your nature, it also keeps your heart and mind young and bright. Yoga improves perception, observation and expression.

For maintaining interpersonal relationships, you have to first have a relationship with yourself. Your relationship with yourself is called integrity. If you have no relationship with yourself, that's called lack of integrity. Secondly, being informal keeps your interpersonal relationship strong, for it gives space for mistakes to happen. You cannot expect perfection in any relationship or situation.

Today one of the biggest problems with the world is emotional instability. When we create an informal outlook and cordial environment around us, we grease the friction and become the master of our environment and not feel helpless about what is happening around us.

Life is very complex. There is no set formula. When you think that you are very honest, that you are righteous, you become a little stiff inside without even knowing it. You point your finger towards others and become intolerant. When you recognize that there are flaws in you, you are then able to accommodate the flaws in other persons.

That's why it is said, ''do a good deed and forget about it''. It is not only your vices or bad qualities that will harm you. Even your good qualities can make you stiff, rude and angry. That is why you should surrender both bad and good qualities. Relax and let go.

There are three types of perfection: Perfection in action, perfection in speech and perfection in feelings. Many who have perfection in their action and speech do not have that at their feeling level. Some have perfection in their feelings and also speak very well but their action will not be perfect. For example, tailors in India. They will speak sweetly but won't give clothes for Diwali in time. They will smile but will not do work.

We don't keep things in mind; we speak right, but do not do work on time. People from other countries see this as a big problem with us. They say that Indians are very nice but they do not do work. On the other hand, the foreigners work on time, but have a lot of things on their minds. Anger and fatigue fill their minds. The three perfections are called trikarana shuddhi. One should try to be perfect in all the three spheres.

If you have a positive state of mind you become creative, entrepreneurs and successful in anything you do. There are some books about positive thinking in the West such as How to Win Friends and Influence People. The man who wrote this book committed suicide. People in the West talk about affirmation. Affirmation is, you wake up in the morning, sit on your bed and affirm to yourself, ''I will be good from today and that I will love myself''. All these affirmations you put on yourself. This is not at all a healthy thing.

Meditation is the only way you can transcend the negative thoughts and then positive thoughts will come spontaneously and automatically. Stress and tension cause negative attitude. Suppose you don't sleep for two days small things can start to irritate. And if you have rested well, the situation will be different.

Some people always blame themselves for something that goes wrong in a close acquaintance. Leave this 'always'. Like, ''I want to be always happy''. Take life as it comes. Sometimes you are upset or angry; it is ok to be upset or angry. Life does not stop for anything; it moves. Just move with the flow.

Encounter With Guruji

On June 11,2009, Guruji had come to Mumbai at Yogi sabhagrah hall at Dadar. The place was limited for 1500 people, but atleast 5000 people were present there to meet Guruji. The hall was jam-packed and it was an amazing night that no one can forget.
Here is what happened:

While standing on the mat that was laid for Guruji, he was about to slip. I was checking which is more slippery, the mat or our mind. It is ok for the mind to be slippery, as long as our faith (vishwas) is not slippery. The whole life is a test of how much faith that we have towards the divine and others. We should never let our faith to slip like this.

What should I speak today?
(After a long pause) Do you all want to talk or we’ll sing bhajans? (Audience: Talk…. Talk ….)
You know, paagal and masti-khoors never talk. I can see little paagalpan little masti here, so why do you want to talk?

Achha tell me, what kind of followers are you? are you a monkey’s child or a cat’s child?
There is a difference. A monkey’s child sees his mother around and does its stuffs; and wherever the mother goes, the child follows. A cat’s child is the opposite. It does its stuffs and the mother cat keeps an eye on her children, if someone goes on a wrong path, she picks him/her and brings back to the right track.
So are you. Do you look for the divine and follow it or become miserable and wait for the divine to pick you up?
There are 2 stages to a sadhak. It is like you want to go somewhere by train and it’s very urgent. The first stage is intensity and struggling. You pick up your luggage and run on platforms, bridges, etc. and somehow catch the train. But once you get inside the train, is there any point running inside the train from one compartment to another in a hope to reach the destination faster? Once you get inside the train, you relax, let go. So is the second stage, you relax and meditate, do pranayams, etc. that really keep you calm.
(Then people wanted to give flowers and garlands and other gifts to Guruji and touch His feet)
Naughty people, do you really want to give me the flowers or touch my feet instead?
I can actually say no to bringing flowers and garlands but I do not say anything only to allow the flower-seller outside to earn some money on such occasions.
I don’t want this flower that you have brought. I want to see your happy face smiling and blossoming like flowers. That is a true offer to me. I have only happy flowers in my garden, I have selected them so. Call me maali or maalik, it’s all the same.
There are so many of you to touch my feet, but if I fall, there is nobody to support me. So you decide which side you want to stand.
My blessing is with all of you.
(Then people with cards want to give it to Guruji)
You don’t have to send letters; as soon as you write them, I get to know the contents immediately. Our minds and hearts are very strongly connected, that’s more important.

And… the day eventually came to an end. With so many people, it was all chaos while exiting. But it was amazing for all those who were in Guruji’s divine presence.

Encounter With Guruji

My first encounter with Guruji was in the Bangalore ashram on June, when I had gone for my 1st advance course with all my friends.

At the satsang, Guruji arrived and asked all of us, “How are you all? Did everyone get their accommodations? Was there any problems coming to ashram? Are you all happy now?”

OMG, I was completely flattered. I mean, here is a guy who travels all over the world, so many times and he is no ordinary person, yet he speaks as if a guest had come to his house, with soo soft voice and very politely. It was awesome.

Earlier I had wondered so many times why do people have so much craze on Guruji. He is just a person. Ya he did some great things, but that’s all. What is the need to run after him so madly and behave insanely? But at the ashram, looking at His divine presence and hearing his talks, I did the same things that I called “crazy”. Then I realized that Guruji is worth doing all that. He is simply amazing. One look at him can really change your attitude, fills you with energy and contentment. It was truly and wonderful experience.

Later, by the end of the advance course, we were all missing Him. The advance course is about to get over and nobody is sure when we can meet Guruji next. All 500 people were thinking about him at the same time and wept as they were doing the dancing process. When they opened their eyes, guess what, Guruji was sitting in front of them! And we had a session with Sri Sri and everyone enjoyed it and were fully contented.

Hence my first advance course was very much special, courtesy of H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar aka Guruji.

Girls vs. Boys

When I was a kid in school, we had this subject called Moral Science which used to happen in early mornings. I loved this subject where we don’t get much to do and can doze off easily. And there was one topic favorite among girls “Equality of Sexes”.
And they talk about how women of India are being ill-treated and abused and not given equal status and etc.

Actually they don’t sound like they want equal status; they want women to be superior.

All they do is talk about women… women… and they call this equality? They hardly speak about men and if at all they do, men are portrayed as being cruel and selfish.
Thoughts did not strike me when I was a kid, but given a chance I would like to defend men.

1. They have special seats reserved for ladies in buses; do they have something like that for men?

2. They have special trains for Ladies only, that goes half-empty, that too at peak hours, do they have special trains called Men’s only or First Class only?

3. They go easy on women even in sports, like in Tennis for example; they have best of 5, whereas it is best of 7 for men.

4. There are reservations for women.

5. They talk of men being cruel? Even in TV serials, women are generally the villains. Nevertheless, even in real life, saas-bahu fights are more intense that Indo-Pak war. At least there are trained professionals fighting for their countries in the border. Even Ramayana and Mahabharata took place because of women!

6. Men ill-treat women? Well women also ill-treat men, which will never be mentioned.

7. If a man slaps a woman, they never ask what that woman did; instead they’ll label that man as being cruel and start beating him. If a woman slaps a man, they never as what that man did, instead they’ll label that man as a “bad guy” and start beating him. Women always get this advantage.

8. Even in divorce cases, the child always remains with the mother.

9. They say it is painful for any women to give birth to its child, something a man can never do. I say, give men a chance to give birth; we will do it with complete honor and that too without cribbing.

There are men who do good for women, but such things will never be mentioned.
If debates like this one starts to favor men, women quickly resort to personal attack by taking our mother’s and sister’s names. Women…… what more can you expect from them?

No wonder women are being supported more than men, in a competitive environment, they can never compete with men on equal grounds.
When God was distributing brains, women were busy chatting about stuffs like clothes, shopping, other women, cruel men, sexy men, etc.

Oh! Yeah! Women can never recognize good and innocent people when they see. To them innocent and good men are boring; and they feel sexy and handsome and manipulative men as interesting. No wonder why majority of young women stand on streets, unmarried yet with kids in their hands.

Another reason for population explosion is that women can never keep their legs closed for a man

Enlightenment is a joke!

Seekers on the spiritual path are curious to know about Enlightenment. What is Enlightenment? I say, ‘‘Enlightenment is like a joke!’’ It is like a fish in the ocean searching for the ocean.

Once upon a time, there was a congregation of fish, who got together to discuss who among them had seen the ocean. None of them could say they had actually seen the ocean. Then one fish said, ‘‘I think my great grandfather had seen the ocean!’’ A second fish said, ‘‘Yes, yes, I have also heard about this.’’ A third fish said, ‘‘Yes, certainly, his great grandfather had seen the ocean.’’
So they built a huge temple and made a statue of the great grandfather of that particular fish! They said, ‘‘He had seen the ocean. He had been connected with the ocean.’’

Enlightenment is the very core of our being; going to the core of our self and living our life from there. We all came into this world gifted with innocence, but gradually, as we became more intelligent, we lost our innocence. We were born with silence and as we grew up, we lost the silence and were filled with words. We lived in our hearts and as time passed, we moved into our heads.

Now the reversal of this journey is enlightenment. It is the journey from the head back to the heart, from words back to silence; getting back to our innocence in spite of our intelligence. Although very simple, this is a great achievement.

Knowledge should lead you to that beautiful point of ‘‘I don’t know.’’ The purpose of knowledge is ignorance!

The completion of knowledge will lead you to amazement and wonder. It makes you aware of this existence. Mysteries are to be lived, not understood. One can live life as fully in its completeness, in its totality.

Enlightenment is that state of being mature and unshakeable under any circumstances. Come what may, nothing can rob the smile from your heart. Going beyond the limited boundaries, and feeling ‘‘all that exists in this universe belongs to me,’’ is enlightenment.

Unenlightenment is easy to define. It is limiting yourself by saying, ‘‘I belong to this particular place’’, ‘‘I am from that culture’’ or ‘‘I belong to this religion’’. It is like children saying, ‘‘My dad is better than your dad,’’ or ‘‘My toy is better than your toy.’’ I think most people around the world are stuck in that mental age group, just the toys have changed. Adults say, ‘‘My country is better than your country’’ or ‘‘my religion is better than
your religion.’’

A Christian will say, ‘‘The Bible is truth,’’ and a Hindu will say, ‘‘The Vedas are the truth. They are very ancient.’’ Muslims will say, ‘‘The Koran is the last word of God.’’ We attribute glory to something just because we are from that culture, not for what it is.

If one could take credit for all that exists throughout the ages and feel as though ‘‘It belongs to me,’’ then, that is maturity. ‘‘This is my wealth because I belong to the divine.’’

The Divine, according to time and space, gave different knowledge in different places. One becomes the knower of the whole universe and can say ‘‘all the beautiful flowers are from my garden.’’ The Divine, according to time and space, gave different knowledge in different places. One becomes the knower of the whole universe and can say ‘‘all the beautiful flowers are from my garden.’’

Have you observed that young children have that sense of belonging that oneness, that innocence? As we grew up we lost that innocence and became more cunning. The
innocence of an ignorant man has no value, and the cunningness of an intelligent man also has no value.

Enlightenment is a rare combination of innocence and intelligence, having words for
expression and, at the same time, being very silent. In that state, the mind is fully in the present
moment. Whatever is necessary is revealed to you in such a natural and spontaneous way, you just sit and the song of the nature flows through you.
